Main Task

The Task

Our main task is to produce a music magazine which includes of a front cover, a contents page, and a double page spread. I feel that the most appropriate genre of music I am going to set for my magazine is punk/rock. I have chosen this because I know a lot of information about this type of genre than others, and i know other people who are interested in this genre therefore their views can be tested and could help my planning and development.

Genre:
My magazine has a hybrid genre which includes of punk and rock. I think this suits well as includes of a lot of rock kind of music which appeals to both genders and different ages. I am going to research a lot of music magazines but to also focus on the rock and punk type of music magazines so I can get good ideas of how to lay out and design my magazine to make it a success. The genre determines what I include in my magazine, the type of images, shots, colours, and types of bands to include, this all has to suit my genre in order to attract the people interested with this genre of music.

Audience:
The audience my magazine will appeal to will be for both genders female, and male. For example it will include information like celebrity gossip which mostly interests females and also include images of 'sexy' women to appeal for the males who will read this. Varieties of bands and artists will be included so that everyone interested in this genre of music will enjoy reading about them. The primary target audience for this music magazine is both genders of the age of 14-25. The secondary audience is from the age of 12+. The reason for my primary audience being 14-25 is that teenagers are more into this genre of music and will be interested in reading about punk rock music rather than people of the ages of 30+ for example. The audience is based on those interested in punk rock music mostly of the teenage age up to mid 20's. This is because most audiences that are interested in this genre are young and around this age range. The image on the front cover may dictate what type of audiences buy the magazine, a young women on the front cover would appeal for boys/men and could also inspire females so this is good for both genders.

Design Research:

Magazine front cover: Analysis

This magazine is a rock magazine called 'KERRANG'. The use of colours in this magazine are good as there is not an overload of colours and is kept to a good colour scheme with the use of colours which include yellow, red, black, and white. The colours suit the genre of the magazine rock as the use of black, white and red and shown very strongly and yellow surrounds artists and important parts of the front cover which grabs your attention. Red is the best colour to grab attention to the audience, the main image in this magazine is shown through the whole front cover in the middle which is a person in a band holding a guitar dressed in red. The use of the person holding the guitar is good because the image is big and red and grabs attention to the magazine in a positive way. The layout shows artists on the left side of the front cover with pictures of them and in big bold writing going through the middle centre of the front cover is '100 GREATEST GIGS EVER' this attracts the attention with its use of bold writing. The image is good as it is big and goes over the masthead 'KERRANG', this is very effective.
This magazine is called 'mixmag'. I think that the layout of this magazine is good as it has a good shot of the lady standing firmly in the middle of the front cover with a part of her head covering the masthead, this is shown very effective. The colour scheme is good as it is a mix of white purple and pink, pink being the colour of clothes that the female is wearing. The colour pink stands out in this front cover attracting attention to the lady, so isn't wearing a lot of clothes suggesting it is 'sexy' to appeal for males and the use of 'girly' colours attracts attention for the female giving the overall look appealing for both genres. The font size used varies, some fonts are big suggesting it is more important than the small text, all text is in light colours still keeping to the colour scheme. Overall I feel that this front cover suits the genre of being pop as it attracts both audiences through its use of colour scheme and images. It has a primary image which stands out in a professional way.

This front cover is called ‘VIBE’ and is a rap/hip hop genre magazine. The colour scheme is used well as it stays basic with its use of black and white, and then red for certain pieces of text to stand out including the masthead. The use of a celebrity (Eminem) in a front cover magazine suggests this magazine includes information and gossip about celebrity artists in this genre magazine (rap). There are five pieces of text highlighted in red which all connect with each other to grab your eye. The masthead is red and so is ‘EMINEM’ therefore trying to make a connection with the magazine and Eminem to make it sound like this issue of this magazine includes a lot of information of Eminem and how he ‘comes clean’ etc. The type of shot used for the main image of Eminem is a medium/close up shot which shows the waist up of him so you can see him up close and his facial expression. His facial expression is pretty blunt, but it shows a ‘bad boy’ kind of attitude which connects to the genre rap as people who ‘rap’ are suggested as ‘bad’ or ‘hard’. The image is used well to connect to the genre and the type of shot shows a celebrity up close with information around him on the front cover. The font also varies in colours and size here depending on the most important bits of information, bit all pieces of text are a bold type of font.

I have looked at a variety of magazines of different genres to try and get a good understanding about music magazines and their differences depending on there genre. This part of my research has helped me as I have grown understanding about different music magazine front covers and especially the 'KERRANG' magazine has helped me as it is more connected to my type of genre of magazine i am going to design and create.

Magazine contents page: Analysis

This magazine contents page is from the magazine 'NME'. This contents page has a bright colour scheme which mainly consists of pink, yellow, white and black. These colours suit the genre of the magazine as it makes the contents seem bright and fun rather then dark and boring. This contents page advertises clubbing and has a free £2 off voucher at the bottom of the page in bold font so the words '£2 OFF!' stands out. On the left hand side it shows the venues of where the clubbing is being hold on the days and times. At the top of the page it shows an image of 4 people who are in a band. The shot is a long/wide shot which show us all 4 members of the band from there feet up to there heads. Underneath this picture shows us some of the contents of the magazine, the page number coloured in black, and the text showing band names (in pink) and what this page includes of (all in bold font to grab attention to it). The audience could vary in age as anyone could be into this type of music, the colours appeal more for younger people but the music the bands play could also appeal for older people. The text font is quite big so it is easy to read.

This contents page is from the magazine 'KERRANG'. I think that the layout of this contents page is good as it shows the contents of various pages on one side of the page with a page number to show how to access them to read more about  it. The main image which is represented in the contents page is a close up shot of a man not looking at the camera but beside it which shows a good effect of being unaware of the camera. The image is bright and is quite big which grabs attention to it. The person in this image is looking to his left and in this case his eyes are looking towards the side of the contents page which have the information of pages and what includes in these page. Therefore this is showing this person is looking at it to maybe show it is 'interesting; information. The colour scheme for this page includes of mainly white black, and yellow. The yellow is mainly used in the text which sum up important information and the title 'Contents' to link the information to show it is a contents page. There are also other images underneath the main image which are linked to a page number and information of what is in that page and the image represents that page. These images are good as they may show what includes in some pages as the images may look appealing and interesting for the reader. The layout of this magazine is good as it shows the information on the left hand side and a long the bottom of the page including images at the bottom and the main image covering the middle of the page along the left side. At the top of the page has the subject title 'Contents' on the right hand side and on the left shows information about this magazine, what includes in it and a picture of the magazine front cover.

This music magazine contents page is from the magazine Q. This magazine contents page is really effective as it uses a good colour scheme which is mostly dark colours and simulates a rock kind of genre. The text is used on the left hand side so show the information of the contents for this magazine. There are two headings on the left hand side, one being 'features' and the other one being 'every month' both highlighted black The numbers for each page are coloured in red, whilst the page information next to them are in white. This fits well with the colour scheme as is connects with the other red, black, and white text and colours on the top and bottom of this page. The layout of this page is good as it shows the main mid shot image in the middle filling up the whole page showing us a popular artist which relates to this magazine genre. This adds appeal to this magazine as people who like this magazine and genre will like the person on the cover of this page as they can relate him to 'Q' type of music. Also the layout directs the text at the top, bottom, and left side of  the page, showing more important information in red as it stands out.

Magazine double page spread: Analysis

This magazine double page spread is from the magazine 'KERRANG'. This page shows information on a certain topic linked to the magazine and genre as it adds interest to the magazine as it shows information people  would like to hear. The layout of these two pages are very good. They show a good use of images which are spread around the pages in the same image effect so they all look the same colour and stick well to a colour scheme. The layout on the right hand side shows text which is an article on the band 'My Chemical Romance' with the man image of the singer from 'My Chemical Romance' on the left hand side so you know that these 2  pages (double page spread) is mainly aimed about that band. The main image shown on the left hand side is big and eye catching, it's interesting as it shows the singer looking down from the camera with his hair covering most of his face whilst he is holding the microphone so you can suggest he is the singer of the band. You can see this image is taken from a music background as if you look behind the singer you can see a man about to hit his drum sticks on his drums, maybe showing this picture is taken whilst doing a show or rehearsing. The colour scheme has a dark (black) background and has a colour scheme of red, white, and black all used in text. The masthead used is slanted with 3 lines of words, the first line is red, the second is white, and the third one is in red again. The text on the right hand side (the article) is in white and next to it on the right shows text highlighted in white in black text with a highlighted title in red. The colour scheme is used well through the colours of red, and white throughout the pages and connects well with the dark, black background. I feel these two pages are really good and look very professional for a double page spread.

This double page spread is from the magazine 'NME' which is a indie/rock type of genre magazine. The colour scheme used in this is used well as it uses mostly light blue, black and white colours. The blue is used to attract you to parts of text more as it stands out from the white and black colours. Also the layout is well structured as is made well as it shows the main image on the left hand side of three teenage boys, known from a band called 'The Teenagers', this makes it obvious that these 2 pages and the article is about this band. At the bottom of this image shows a blue box (this suits with the colour scheme to outline key information) with 'NEED TO KNOW' information about this band, this adds interest about the band which makes you want to know something as the word 'need' insinuates you have to know it which makes people want to read it. The title for this page is 'THE TEENAGERS' to show the page and article is about this band and information about them. This masthead is located in the middle at the top of the page above the article. On the far right side is more text including information about 'The Teenagers' and other band and artists. Sub headings are highlighted in light blue to stick with a good colour scheme. The type of shot for the main image in a long shot which shows the whole bodies of each person in picture from a bit of a high ground view, looking down slightly at the 'teenagers' with them all looking at the camera. The font size is the same all over the two pages apart from when headings, sub headings, or titles are being displayed because these bits of text need to be highlighted so you understand what each paragraph or text is about.

Layouts:

Front cover layouts:

This design I have made for a layout of my front cover is well set as it includes text and information of music around the main image which is set as the background for the whole page, this way text is transparent around the image and can look professional. Also a masthead is set at the top of the page which can be noticed easily and has a strap line above it which will include a quick and snappy sentence to relate to the magazine. My bar code will be on the bottom left hand side, above this will include a 'bubble' which includes text about a 'FREE' item which adds appeal to the magazine because people are then available to get a free item with the magazine. This 'FREE bubble' is set in a good place on the front cover and is known as the 'sweet spot'. The sweet spot is a place on a magazine front cover which is noticed a lot and is where people tend to look at the most. Putting this bubble there means that people may firstly see the word 'FREE' or 'WIN' instantly and want the chance to win or get something free out of this magazine and may buy it.
This layout for my front cover is very similar to my first front cover. The aspects used are nearly the same but are presented in different ways and places around the page. The bar code is located on the other side of the page, and also has the 'FREE' bubble on the other side of the page which is not in the sweet spot like my first layout. On the left includes a picture of the band or artist and more text above it.

I like my first layout the most out of my two front cover layouts and have decided to use it for my layout for my magazine front cover. It allows access for text to be around the image as my image is set as my background for the cover. Also the 'sweet spot' has been covered by a 'FREE' or 'WIN' bubble which I feel will work effectively.

Content page layouts:
This layout I have created for my contents page I feel is really good. It includes the information needed about the contents of the magazine on the right hand side and along the bottom which also includes a box about other information (text) and another image (picture) so that this page doesn't get boring. The top includes the masthead and an image next to it relating to the pages for the magazine (an image which will be included in the magazine).

My second layout I have created includes my main image as the background of this page. It then shows text at the bottom of the page and the information of the contents of the pages on the right hand side. The masthead is shown clear at the top and is easy to read. This layout is a lot basic than my first layout as the there is only one image which is the background of the page and then information is placed on the right side and bottom of the page, this layout is much more basic and simple.

In my opinion I like my first layout the best as it has a lot more to offer than my first layout. My second layout seems a bit boring and does not use up all the space the page has to offer. Whereas my first layout is covered up more, includes more images, and seems more interesting to read and to absorb whilst still giving information about pages in my magazine.

Double page spread layouts:
This layout is what I have created is for my double page spread which will include of an article by an artist I choose to use. As it is a double page spread this part of my project has to take over two pages. My first side includes my main image which will be of the same person on my front cover as it shows this person is popular and is related to my magazine and its genre. There will be an image of this person on the left hand side of this page including the masthead for this page at the top. On the right hand side will show another image on the top right hand side. An article will be shown under a heading or a quote to show what the article is about etc.

My final layout I have made for my double page spread shows my main image on the right hand side yet again, but this time the masthead going through the image a bit and continuing over onto the far right side of the page. The article is placed in the same place as my first layout, on the right side, this time under my article includes two pictures/images of related music news. On the far right at the top has information about music, and news related to this pages information. This page is good as it supplies a lot of information and news about related music and includes pictures next to each other under text so that there is not a lot of text in the same place, this way it doesn't look boring.

I think both of these layouts are good as they provide information and images for the readers to look at and to get attracted to. But I have chosen yet again my first layout to use for my double page spread as it shows the article and information needed and my main image on one side with a heading above it to make it seem related to the page. Also I will be including a quote on the top of the page above the article so it is clear what the article is about and the quote will be slanted so that it looks more fun rather than a straight line like the rest of my text. I have another picture in the top right corner still relating to this page and article. I feel this double page spread will be good through its use of images and quote and the way the page is presented and laid out.

Colour Scheme:

Colour schemes are very important in magazines. These are used to set an opinion on different magazines and how the colours are represented with the magazine, for example if a music magazine has light colours it is more than likely to be seen as a type of pop genre than rather a rock genre magazine. Colour schemes present what a magazine is and there are different opinions due to this. Some people who are into my genre rock/punk are sometimes sterotyped as people who are 'emo's'. This word is sterotyped at people who like punk or rock music who wear and like dark colours like black and red. Therefore I have focused on colours such as red, black and white for my magazine as white goes with everything espically black and are good for applying any coloured images to them.

This is the type of colour scheme I going to try to stick to as it will suit my genre and audience, as people who like this type of music will like these type of colours. Of course other colours will be added to add a range of mixture, but I will stick to this colour scheme. Other colours may be added for background editing or photo editing to create a good look for images, these editing will most likely be a darker editing as it will suit my audience and genre yet again.

Mastheads:

This masthead is from the magazine 'KERRANG' its genre is rock and its masthead has connected to its use of genre as rock is normally seen as dark and dark colours, therefore a black masthead is a good idea. The main image on this magazine is a man who is in a band. The man's head covers over the masthead, this is seen as very effective as it shows the person is interacting with the masthead making it look like he is standing in front of him.

This masthead is from the magazine 'NME'. This masthead is also from a magazine which is a rock kind of genre. Red and black are the main colours when associated with rock, a red masthead suits this genre and with a black outline relates to it even more. Also this masthead is quite unique as it is not a word it is clearly 'NME' which when said sounds like enemy, so this masthead is still easy to read even though spelt differently.

This masthead is from the magazine 'Q'. This masthead is also unique as it is basic and simple with a simple letter Q, it is not a word, just a letter. This masthead is red and white, still relating to the genre of rock. These mastheads help me get ideas for my masthead when I make my own masthead I can see what different mastheads are like and how there colours and font styles suit to there genre.

This masthead is from the genre 'mixmag'. This mast head is white and bold so it stands out very well. No letters in this masthead is in capitals but the boldness still makes it effective. This masthead is set in a dark background so it is easy to read with a good colour scheme. This magazine is a pop genre and the masthead suits its genre with its use of lower capitals and circles on top of the 'i' in the word 'mixmag'.
Here are some types of mastheads I am considering of using for my magazine 'Shuffle'. Below shows the types of mastheads I have created by using various websites and software's.

These are different mastheads I have made to get an idea of which one to use for my masthead in my magazine. I have printed out these different mastheads of my magazine ‘Shuffle’ in order to get an audience feedback of what people think of it in hope to find out which the public think are best. I will be mostly asking people of a teenage age which suit to my genre as it will be more useful for my research because the masthead will then suit my magazine and genre more. I personally feel that the last masthead of 'Shuffle' is the best as it is a good colour to suit the genre and is red which catches the eye better. Its use of the backwards 'E' at the end of shuffle shows that it has been 'shufled' around which adds a good effect to its name. It’s easy to read and is of a good size for a masthead.

Fonts:

These are some fonts I have tested in Microsoft word to see what they would look like as text in a 'Shuffle' magazine.

I have tested a variety of fonts with the words of my magazine front cover (shuffle) to see what fonts would look the most appealing as text in my magazine. I have chosen the font 'Impact' and 'Calibri (Body)' to have as my text in my magazine. I feel this font is the most appropriate for my music magazine as they are basic and easy to read but they still look appealing through its use of being bold (Impact) so it stands out well. The use of the fun and bold font makes the magazine text seem a lot less boring and a lot more fun and is more likely to appeal for teenagers instead of having a standard, boring font. Also this font is in bold and stands out easier for the reader to read.

Images And Type Of Shots:

This image is for the magazine front cover 'KERRANG' I feel that this image taken suits well for a magazine front cover as it is bit, and the use of a mid shot shows the body and up of the person that is in the photo. This way you can see mostly what this person is doing and see there facial expressions a lot better. This shot taken looks good as it looks like a action shot through its use of the guitar player holding the guitar and looking in the distance making it seem he is focusing on playing the guitar. Also it looks like a shot being taken whilst he is playing in a gig as his hair looks sweaty or wet, to show he is putting effort into his music. This shot suits well for its audience and genre as people who like this genre will know this person is in the band 'Green Day'. The types of clothes he is wearing also suggests he is from a rock genre as most of his clothes are very dark and he is placed in a dark background. The use of lighting in the background shines upon him from behind so you can see light shining from the top of his head and his body, this gives a good effect and a good effect to mix with the magazine colour scheme as the white goes well with its masthead.

This shot is portrayed well as it shows 'Lil Wayne' (a well known artist in the hip hop and rap industry) standing on a thrown. This photo suggests that because he is sitting on the thrown it seems like he is the king of music, as this is a music magazine. This makes the audience look at it and think he is very successful and popular as he is kneeling on a thrown. The way he is kneeling on the thrown/chair and not sitting on it suggests that his attitude it very laid back and has a sense of 'bad boy' attitude rather than sitting on it normally like normal kings would do. I like this shot as it is a mid shot taken from quite far down looking directly into the middle of the thrown/chair with Lil Wayne kneeling down as if he is trying to kneel to look directly at the camera which is what he is doing. He is kneeling down to look at the camera with facial expressions of him smiling suggesting he is happy whilst kneeling on a thrown. This shows he is looking directly at the camera smiling trying to show he is happy. The type of clothes he is wearing is also very laid back, the clothes are very informal as he is wearing shorts and a long sleeve t-shirt rather than trousers and a shirt. This gives us a lot of information about his character and personality through the type of clothes he wears and the facial expressions he gives us.

This image is placed on the front cover of the magazine 'VIBE'. The image on this front cover is of the rap artist 'T.I.'. This magazine is a rap/r'n'b type genre and the use of 'T.I.' as the image connects well with its genre. This image is a close up shot which shows mainly of the neck up to the head of T.I. The image shows us he is wearing a shirt, tie, blazer, hat and glasses which shows he is wearing quite formal clothes. His facial expression is very blunt which is good for this genre is it shows is trying to act quite hard to represent rap style artists as rap artists are normally stereotyped as being 'hard'. This type of shot taken is effective as it shows us clearly who is on the front cover and anyone interested in this genre will know who it is. You can see his facial expressions easily and close up views of what kind of clothes he is wearing. The type of clothes he is wearing look quite expensive which shows that T.I may be quite rich. The top of the image (his hat) goes under the masthead which makes it look like he is actually standing behind the masthead to give a more reality type of look to the shot.

Planning:

My Main Images And There Types of Shots:
Front Cover Shots:

This is a shot i have taken of a teenage girl holding a guitar. This is shot is good as it is a medium/close up shot so it shows the knees up of this teenager, this way you can see most of her and what she is doing, holding, and facial expressions. I like this shot as she is focused in the middle of the page and a guitar going through the middle of the shot showing that this image is about music. The background is blank so the image is mainly focused of the person and is a good image to edit to increase brightness, contrast etc. Also this picture shows us this teenagers facial expressions which are mainly showing her focusing on playing a guitar whilst showing a bit of a grin on her face showing she has 'attitude' as my magazine is aimed at mostly teenagers they can connect to this.

I like this photo too as the shot is close up which allows us see this teenager from the waist and up (mid shot). This shot is in line with this persons eye which means this shot is not a high angle shot or a canted shot, it is from eye level. I like the colour use in this image as the head of the guitar blends well with the background of the image and this teenage boy's top connects well with the guitar and also has space on the left hand side for text to be added.

This final shot I have taken for ideas for my front cover is taken from a low angle as it looks up at this teenager. This shows the girl holding a red guitar against the floor with a leg on each side of the guitar so you can see her legs and guitar fully. The use of a low angle shot works well I think as you can see what is happening in the whole image.

I have chosen to use my first image as my magazine front cover as it looks very effective of a mid shot showing the teenage girl holding a girl looking like she is in an action shot as her hair looks like she is head banging her head towards the guitar and shows an effect of her hair standing up in mid air. Also her attitude in her facial expression shows she is concentrating and shows a 'bad girl' attitude which may appeal for both male and females. I think this image is really good for a magazine front cover, and can be edited to look even better.

Contents page shots:
This is one of the images i have taken i might chose for my contents page in my music magazine. This type of shot is good (long shot) as it shows not one, but two 'artists' shown in one photo, both standing next to each other holdings guitars. This shot shows the two people holding guitars in different ways, they may be displayed differently due to there personality which is why they may be holding them different. The teenage girl is holding the guitar with both hands whilst looking at the camera. Whilst the teenage boy is holding it with one hand whilst the guitar is leaning against the floor, and not looking at the camera but looking in the distance. This way show that the male in this image may have a chilled out attitude thinking is doesn't need to look at the camera so he looks away pretending the camera isn't there.

This second image I have created which i might use for my main image for my magazine contents page is very similar to my first one but shows different types of attitudes in the girls face and body expressions. This image is a long shot and this image the teenage girl is posing more and winking at the camera. This image is more affective towards grabbing attention towards the male audience as this image may be seen to them as more 'sexy' as she is not just normally standing there looking at the camera, it adds appeal for the male audience and also female audiences may like this image too. The teenage boy is staying in the same kind of position for the same reasons as the first image.

I have decided to use my first image for my main image in my contents page. My reasons for this is because it shows a good use of appropriate facial expressions which are both very similar in both teenagers in the image. They are both holding guitars in ways which suit them both and an amp is placed in the bottom right corner to show they are using music equipment. The background is mostly blank which is good for editing and shows a good use of lighting to shine across onto the people in the image.

Double page spread shots:

I like this photo i have taken a lot. It shows a good use of lighting which gets attracted to the main focus point (the teenage girl). She is yet again showing some attitude in the image which isn't just a smile which is normally used in photos. She is holding the top of the guitar firmly with both hands and is looking down at the guitar with a grin on her face as if she is looking at the guitar as a person.

This image I have taken is much more different than my previous pictures. This image is a mid shot. In this image she is not looking at the camera but yet again down to the floor with her hair flowing in front of her directing towards the guitar. This shot shows a good image of the red guitar. Her legs are located apart from each other and makes it look like she is playing the guitar in a fast, passionate motion.

This final image is a good action shot and long shot as it shows the girl's whole body and her smashing the guitar into the amp which is placed in the background in many of my images. This is effective as it shows a 'rebelious' side of this girls attitude and shows in her facial expression she wants to hit the amp hard as if she really wants to brake it. This image could confuse the audience to think why she is doing this. This is effective as the audience will get attracted to the image as it stands out from other images as it is exciting.

I have decided to use my first two images for my double page spread, as this page is bigger than my front cover and contents page I feel these images will fit in this page well as they use the same kind of colour scheme and look different to my other images as one shows her standing up looking at the ground whilst the other one shows her looking at the ground but this time sitting down playing her guitar with her hair going over her face.

Mock outs:

Front cover mock out:

This is my mock out i have done on paper for my front cover. It shows my main image which is the background for my whole page. My bar code on the bottom left corner. Text and images on the right hand side with some on the left hand side followed by a 'WIN' bubble which will advertise something you can win in this magazine. At the top of the front cover shows a masthead which say 'SHUFFLE' with the backwards E to show it is rotated around and shuffled around. Above this masthead is a strap line and on the top right hand side shows the price and issue for the magazine.
Contents page mock out:

This is my mock out I have created for my contents page on paper. This page shows 'SHUFFLE' yet again on the top with a related music picture to its right. Down the right hand side and bottom of this page shows the information for the contents of the magazine also including an image at the bottom left of the page. This the centre/left side of this page shows my image of two 'artists', this image is shown above in my image and shot analysis. Going through the middle of this image shows text which is highlighted and says 'Young Chance Interview'. Young chance is going to be the name on my teenage artist in my magazine.

Double page spread mock out:

Finally this is my mock out I have made on paper for my double page spread for my magazine. This part of my magazine shows my main image covering the left hand side of the page with the headline of the page above it. To its right shows the article (interview) and above this shows a quote which will be a quote 'Young Chance' has said in interview i have created with her. On the top right of my page shows an arrow which has text inside which says 'A Shuffle Exclusive' and underneath this is my second image i have decided to include in this page which i have spoke about above in my image and shot analysis.

This part of my planning shows all my images i have taken which i have looked through and decided which ones i am going to use for my final magazine. This is good as I can see all my images one place and the ones i have planned to use can be edited to make them better and more professional for my magazine.

Images:

My magazine is mainly aimed for the teenage ages for male and female. My images include of people of this age, this way the audience looking at this magazine can see the people in the magazine may be the same kind of age as them and they can relate to them a lot through there looks, clothes, or facial expressions. Also reasons for having this aged people in my images for my magazines may suggest that my target audience can connect to them more or even look up to them as inspirations of wanting to become successful in the music industry as my double page spread includes an interview from 'Young Chance' (my made up artist) a successful singer of a young age who has become very famous. All my images include younger generation people in them in my front cover, contents page, and double page spread.

Location:

Location of where to take my shots was important. I knew i had to take them somewhere where a blank background was presented so that the people in my images can be set with a light background so that when i come to edit my photo's it will be easier to change the brightness, contract etc in my photo's. And also this way having a blank background adds more attention to my main image of the person/people in them.

These are pictures i have taken which show the blank backgrounds and where i took them. I took my images in a room in my house against a way with just white paint on them so that when my pictures are taken there is a blank background, and are good for editing. This location was more than appropriate to take my images as this room has a lot of lights in them which can be changed to have the room lighter or darker. I could chose an appropriate light setting to take my photos with to make them a great success as possible.

Testing

This part of my work is important as it allows me to get audience feedback from my work and research to see what parts people (mostly people in my target audience) think are the best about my work and what parts are the best to include in my final parts of my magazine. The idea of doing my testing is to ask the right type of people because the effects of testing is it will change my final products. I need to ask the right people, I mostly ask people in my target audience as they are the ones who will benefit from the outcome and if they like some pieces better than others then I will most likely put it in my work as they will be the ones who will like it and want to buy it. My target audience will like the magazine more if i get the information they like off them.

I have handed out my 20 sheets of paper with all my masthead designs on them to people in my target audience to see what there feedback is like and which masthead out stands as the best. This way if I feel that the masthead is also good I will highly consider about using it in my magazine.

This is the sheet i handed out and asked 20 people in my class which ones they liked best. Three people liked the sixth masthead design the best. Five people liked my third design the best. And my last masthead design got 12 votes which gave it the most points. This was my favourite design too and as my audience feedback was more than positive about this masthead i am going to use this masthead for my magazine and its front cover etc.

Questionnaire:

I have also constructed a questionnaire for my testing as this can get me a variety of answers from people who are in my target audience. This way I see what many people think on a lot of different topics of my work and find out if a lot of people prefer something from something else. This way I can make changes to improve my work and get opinions from different people. I have handed out 10 questionnaire and here is what it looks like.

This questionnaire was very useful as i got a lot of opinions out of it. Here are my results
1) Question 1 got results that 3 people chose a concert, 2 people chose an outside atmosphere, and 5 thought a blank background was the best for a music magazine background.
2) Question 2 got results that 5 people thought red was the best colour. And 5 people thought black was the best colours to suit a magazine.
3) Question 3 results were interesting as 9 people thought an image of a person holding an instrument on the front cover of a magazine would be best. Leaving 1 person who answered no to this question. That shows that 90% of people thought a person holding an instrument was the best!
4) Question 4 got results that 8 people thought a masthead which was big and bold was the best. Leaving 2 people thinking it was not the best idea.
5) This question got results that 3 people thought an extra section of sport would be the best. Again 3 more people thought that a section on fashion would be best. And finally 4 people thought a section on celeb gossip was the best chose to have extra in this music magazine.
6) Question 6 got results that 6 people thought a front cover with lots of pictures on it was better. And 4 people thought a front cover with lots of pictures on it was not the best idea.
7) Finally question 7 got results that 6 people thought this rock/punk genre would suit best with red, black and white colours on it.

This results are very helpful for my work as it shows what a lot of people think and i can use the results i got to alter my work to correct it to make it better in order to get a better success of a magazine to suit my target audience and genre better.
